Desk terminal

A screen and a dial on the desk, so the assistant is something you reach for rather than something you launch.

How it is run

The brief starts with the distance it is read from and the thing your hand lands on. A terminal that has to be woken, unlocked and navigated is a phone in a worse position, so the dial is specified before the software and the screen angle is fixed to the seated eye line.

  • Brief — Screen size, viewing angle and what the dial actually controls are set first.
  • Specification — Display class, dial detent feel and the speaker enclosure are written into the order, not left to the factory.
  • Quality control — Units are sampled on dial feel, on legibility at arm’s length, and on whether the terminal still answers with the network down.

Reach for it, do not launch it.

Every line is drawn around the same assistant. It is asked for out loud, it resolves what it can on the device in front of you, and it answers with the thing rather than a conversation about the thing.

  • Ask — Speak to the terminal, or turn the dial. Both reach the same place.
  • Understand — The state of the room is held on the terminal, so it still answers with the network down.
  • Act — The dial moves the thing you named, and the screen shows it moving.

01 · The line

Desk terminal

A terminal earns its space on a desk or it does not belong there. This one is specified around reach and reading distance first: a dial your hand finds without looking, and a screen angled to a seated eye line.
